Oregon leads the way nationally when it comes to making sure that women have access to safe, legal, and affordable reproductive health services, including abortion. It’s time we bring Oregon’s common sense approach to the rest of the nation.

For decades, Congress has prohibited abortion coverage under government-funded health plans and health programs by leaving in place the so-called "Hyde Amendment."

This longstanding attack on women's reproductive freedom hurts low-income women the most. Women with private health plans have access to a full range of reproductive health options, but options are restricted for low-income women. Members of the military, veterans, and government employees are also affected.

It's time to push back. That's why we're supporting legislation to repeal the Hyde Amendment and require that federal health insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover abortion services. Our proposal also prohibits the government from restricting abortion coverage by private insurance companies.

Women's reproductive health decisions should be treated the same as any other health care decision. It should be between the woman, her family, and her doctor.
