My own Grandmother wouldn't have been allowed in our country...

Our immigration system is broken.

America was founded on the principles of liberty and freedom. The world looks to us for our humanitarian spirit and inclusive values – but we are falling short. Our immigration system is in dire need of comprehensive reform.

Donald Trump’s policies go against our American values. Recently in Hillsboro, Oregon a U.S. citizen and his wife were cornered – and frightened – by plainclothes ICE agents. And then a similar incident occurred in Portland when plainclothes ICE agents arrested a man after entering a home where he was working without a warrant. These questionable tactics cause fear in our communities, but they do NOT make them safer.

I’m fighting back. I’ve written letters to local ICE supervisors demanding an apology and a review of their practices. I’ve also introduced a bill to prevent raids in sensitive locations like health clinics, places of worship, and courthouses.

Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked immigrant communities with dangerous policies. His travel bans target people seeking safety from war zones and religious persecution. He’s threatening the future of hundreds of thousands of young people by calling for an end to DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. And he’s proposed an immigration policy so strict that my own Italian Grandmother would not have been allowed in the country because she didn’t speak English.

Our checks and balances prevailed again when a judge blocked Trump’s third attempt at a travel ban that discriminates based on nationality. It is our responsibility as Americans to speak out against these actions and stand up for human rights, diversity, and respect. Share this post and let’s keep up the fight for immigration reform!
