U.S. House, 1st District

Suzanne Bonamici (Democrat)

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) in January won the seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. David Wu last year. We liked her then because this former consumer lawyer—who earned praise for diligence and intelligence while representing Beaverton in the Oregon Legislature—is the kind of no-drama mama her constituents deserve. She shows nothing but promise. Republican Delinda Morgan, a sincere, affable heavy-equipment operator and martial arts instructor, is brand new to politics and isn’t running much of a campaign. Also running are Steven Reynolds of the Progressive Party and Bob Ekstrom of the Constitution Party. Look no further than Bonamici.

What would Bonamici change about herself? “I’d like to get by on less sleep.” [...]

October 12, 2012 – By The Oregonian Editorial Board

Somewhere in the nation, we’re assured, there are hot campaigns for U.S. House seats and indeed for control of the House of Representatives. It’s hard to see that from this neighborhood, where all incumbent members of Congress seem on a clear path to re-election — and where they also all have a clear claim to return to their seats in what we hope will be a more productive congressional session.

1st District (Washington County, northwest Oregon)

Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonamici has been in Congress only seven months, since winning a special election to succeed David Wu, but is demonstrating the commitment and skills that won her a strong reputation in the Oregon Legislature. Reflecting the concerns of the tech-heavy district, Bonamici has been pursuing issues of cybersecurity and visas for foreign workers with high-tech skills. She has joined with Republican Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler of Washington to introduce the Marine Debris Emergency Act, to deal with the wreckage of the Japanese earthquake washing up on Northwest shores. As in her time in the Legislature, Bonamici is also focused on supporting education and small business.

Her opponents are Republican Delinda Morgan, a heavy equipment operator and winery owner calling for a sharp reduction in the size and activities of the federal government; Bob Ekstrom, a businessman representing the Constitution Party urging a balanced budget; and Steve Reynolds, a student and veteran who has managed to combine the Green, Progressive and Libertarian party nominations, emphasizing the need to end U.S. military activities abroad. Northwest Oregon voters should stick with Bonamici. [...]

In her short tenure, she’s shown the energy and enterprise that are essential

When Suzanne Bonamici won the special congressional election last January, she earned the right to begin her re-election campaign almost immediately. Bonamici replaced Congressman David Wu, halfway through his two-year term. Having been in office some 10 months, Bonamici is on our general election ballot.

As the Democratic Party nominee, Bonamici has three opponents: Bob Eckstrom of the Constitution Party, Delinda Morgan of the Republican Party and Steven Reynolds of the Oregon Progressive Party.

Rep. Bonamici gained two excellent House assignments. She serves on the House Budget Committee and on the House Committee on Science and Technology.

In the wake of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Bonamici has introduced the Marine Debris Emergency Act, which would expedite clean up of the detritus from Japan’s disaster. She has gained bipartisan support for this legislation.

Since her election, Bonamici has made several visits to Clatsop County, for town hall meetings and other public events. She appears to know what’s going on out here, well beyond the nation’s capital.

In her very short time in office, Rep. Bonamici has been a quick study and demonstrated the kind of energy and enterprise we would hope to find in our member of Congress. We urge her re-election.

Introduces First Major Piece of Legislation – Workforce Infrastructure for Skilled Employees (WISE) Investment Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) introduced H.R. 5975, the Workforce Infrastructure for Skilled Employees (WISE) Investment Act today to help identify local skills gaps and put Americans back to work. This is Bonamici’s first major piece of legislation since she assumed office in February.

The WISE Investment Act establishes a pilot program that will provide grants to eligible workforce investment boards, community colleges, and other vocational institutions to hire local business liaisons. The liaisons will identify and analyze existing skills gaps and find ways to appropriately address them.

“Workforce development is a critical part of closing our nation’s skills gap,” Bonamici said. “The WISE Investment Act will help provide workforce organizations the resources they need to align training with the skills needed in our communities.”

The local business liaisons funded by WISE Investment grants will conduct a strategic skills gap assessment – identifying employment opportunities that are difficult to fill, areas of growth and decline among industries, and the skills of unemployed or underemployed individuals. The findings of the assessment will then inform a strategic skills gap action plan – a road map for addressing the identified skills gaps in the region.

“Workforce development programs throughout the state and country are already doing an excellent job; this bill will assist their efforts. Increased collaboration between these organizations and local businesses will help to ensure that we are offering training opportunities that are aligned with local jobs,” Bonamici added.

Congresswoman Bonamici consulted with a number of representatives from local businesses, community colleges, and workforce investment boards across Oregon’s First District throughout her first few months in office. Their concerns and feedback inspired this bill.

Mark Lewis, owner of Woodfold Manufacturing in Forest Grove, participated in a workforce development roundtable led by Bonamici at Chemeketa Community College in McMinnville in May. “From time to time we have jobs available at Woodfold that require certain high-level skills and training,” Lewis said. “By helping small businesses integrate their needs into local workforce development strategies, Congresswoman Bonamici’s bill will allow Woodfold to more effectively focus our needs, which will in turn facilitate job placements.”

I have now completed three months in Congress. Since my swearing in, I’ve worked vigorously for the constituents in Oregon’s First District.

My top priority in Congress is to rebuild our economy. The first bill I co-sponsored will allow credit unions to do more small business lending, which will encourage their growth and create new jobs. On the Budget Committee, I am committed to tackling the debt and deficit with a balanced approach. Unfortunately, the House-passed budget provides additional tax breaks for the wealthiest, inhibits job growth, and cuts spending to our safety-net programs designed to help the most vulnerable in our communities. I continue to work with a number of colleagues to attempt to change some of the most harmful provisions of this budget.

I fought to keep student loan interest rates down and to prevent cuts in federal education funds to states for important programs like Title I and Head Start.

Additionally, I’ve been outspoken in my support of a woman’s right to choose and LGBT equality. I spoke on the House floor about the importance of contraception coverage and access to affordable healthcare. I’ve cosponsored bills to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and to end discrimination of LGBT members of our community within employment, education, adoption, and foster care systems.

There is still much to do in our nation’s capitol, and my 2012 re-election campaign is already well underway. It is an honor to serve the constituents of the First Congressional District, and I hope to continue serving.

Thank you for your continued support.

Suzanne

Although the campaign is over, this isn’t an ending. It’s the beginning of the work we have to do together to put people back to work, rebuild a strong economy and a strong middle class, and put the voice of everyday people back into Congress.

I’m excited to begin and humbled by the awesome responsibility that the people of Northwest Oregon have trusted me with through their votes.

With appreciation,
