Bonamici Joins Sit-In on House Floor to Demand a Vote on Gun Violence Prevention
June 22, 2016 - Washington, DC - In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history in Orlando last week, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici joined House Democrats at a sit-in on the House Floor to demand that Speaker Ryan allow a vote on bipartisan legislation to address gun violence prevention.

“There is so much we can do to address gun violence,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “It’s not thoughts and prayers. It’s not moments of silence. We’ve done enough of that. Our constituents today are looking at us and saying please take action.
“I know somebody with a five-year-old son. Her son was playing in his room with some friends and she knocked on the door to get them for a snack and they hid behind the bed. They did that because they had just had a lockdown drill in kindergarten class. It brought tears to her eyes, that mother, to think that that's the kind of world that we live in today.
“Let’s do this for the families of the victims in the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Let’s do this for the victims of Aurora. For the victims of Columbine, of Umpqua Community College, of Clackamas Town Center in Oregon. Let’s do this not only for the families of the victims, but for the future. For our kids. Enough is enough.”
House Democrats are calling for an immediate vote on bipartisan, commonsense gun violence prevention legislation to help keep guns out of dangerous hands, with two bills:
- The bipartisan King-Thompson legislation to expand and strengthen our background checks system;
- The bipartisan ‘No Fly, No Buy’ bill to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists.
