Voters respond to Suzanne’s life-long commitment to fairness and opportunity
Hillsboro, Ore (November 8, 2011) – Just three months ago, Suzanne Bonamici announced her candidacy for the First Congressional District of Oregon. Bonamici brought with her a strong record and reputation for standing up for middle class families and small businesses – and voters responded today by electing her as the Democratic nominee for the general election in January.
“I have been fighting for fairness and opportunity my entire career,” Bonamici said. “From working as a consumer protection attorney, to representing small businesses misled by corporations, to fighting for middle class families and those struggling to get ahead as a legislator, my actions match my values.”
Central to Bonamici’s work is the basis of the American Dream: the promise that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can succeed. The financial crisis revealed that now, more than ever, families and small businesses need representatives in Congress who will work to keep this promise alive.
“Long before there was such a thing as a mortgage crisis, I was working to protect homeowners from predatory lenders. Long before there was a national recession, I was standing up for our families, our small businesses, and our schools,” Bonamici said. “It is not enough to simply say that you’ll do something. Oregonians need to trust that you will. Oregonians can count on me to stand up for them because I already have.”
Carol Butler, campaign manager for Bonamici, added, “Suzanne won the primary for the same reason she will win the general election. She is the perfect candidate for this district and for this moment in history. At a time when voters are incredibly frustrated and politicians are just beginning to talk about holding corporations accountable, Suzanne has as lifetime of credibility and has earned a reputation as one of Oregon’s most principled and effective leaders.”
Bonamici celebrated her win tonight in Hillsboro, Oregon – a community in the heart of Oregon’s First Congressional District. Gathered around her were supporters from across the district, including Larry Taylor, chair of the Clatsop County Democrats.
During his introduction of Suzanne, Larry said, “I support Suzanne because she has integrity and because we can trust her to stand up for us in Washington, D.C. Why? Because Suzanne has been standing up for families and small businesses her entire career. We know she’ll fight for us because she already has.”
In response to questions about the national implications of this race, Bonamici said, “A lot of people will comment on the significance of this race nationally. But this race is not about national politics – and Washington County is not Washington, D.C. This election is about the people of the First District and who best can represent their interests in Congress. With every decision I make, I will always put what’s best for this District first.”
Bonamici now will face the Republican nominee in the general election on January 31, 2012.
